Consent To Osteopathic Examination and Treatment

Please read the following carefully and discuss any questions you may have with your treating practitioner.

Osteopathy is a form of manual medicine that views the body as one whole unit to find the primary source of your problem. To achieve this, a thorough health history is required and this will be discussed prior to your examination and treatment.

Osteopathic techniques are generally considered to be very safe. However, as with many healthcare procedures, examinations or treatments, there are risks associated with osteopathic care. These include, but are not limited to,

  • Experiencing mild muscle soreness 24—48 hours after treatment- please be advised that this is considered to be normal, as your body is responding to the treatment.
  • Muscle and joint soreness, joint sprains, muscle strains, including exacerbation of your presenting symptoms; disc injuries, fractures, strokes and stroke-like symptoms.
  • I understand that serious injuries are extremely rare- Your osteopath will use their assessment and clinical reasoning skills to minimise any risks and ensure your best interest is always prioritised.
  • I do not expect the practitioner to be able to anticipate all potential risks and complications associated with the proposed care.

I understand that:

  • All osteopaths at Wanaka Osteopathic Clinic are fully qualified and registered.
  • A variety of techniques may be discussed and performed throughout my appointment, and that these will be explained.
  • I can withdraw my consent at any time throughout the consultation and any future consultations.
  • I may not have relief of my symptoms after my first visit, and multiple sessions may be necessary.
  • I will have the opportunity to ask the osteopath any questions relating to the information provided.

I confirm that:

  • I have disclosed all relevant health and medical information.
  • I have read and understand the above information.
  • I hereby acknowledge my consent to the proposed osteopathic care by the treating practitioner.
